Abstract

The microscopic structures of liquid Ne and Xe have been experimentally determined using the neutron diffractometer 7C2 at LLB – Saclay. The structure factor S(k) has been determined for several thermodynamic states, with 30≤T[K]≤40 and 20<≤p[bar]≤400 for Ne and 220≤T[k]≤280 and 50≤p[bar]≤400 for Xe, respectively. Also the isothermal density derivatives of S(k) have been derived, at several temperatures, and compared, when possible, with theoretical predictions and simulation data. The results contribute to understand the detailed features of the microscopic interaction law of Ne, a system with a markedly quantum mechanical behaviour, and of Xe, whose large polarizability significantly enhances the importance of the irreducibile many-body interactions.
