In September 2016 the first volume of the ESFRI Scripta Neutron Scattering Facilities in Europe - Present status and future perspectives was published. It was the result of the analysis carried out by a group of experts, the Neutron Landscape Group, set up by ESFRI with the mandate of examining the availability of neutron sources for scattering-based research, to European scientists over the 2030-2050 horizon. Since then, the process of launching the new ESFRI Roadmap 2018 started, and the Landscape of Research Infrastructures relevant to all fields, among which Physical Science and Engineering (PSE), will be updated. Novel concepts and principles impacting on RI sustainability and lifetime are discussed also in close connection with the European Commission guidelines. The talk provides an overview of the past recent analysis with a possible outlook.
