Abstract

In the last decades, two new systems have emerged as powerful platforms for quantum many-body physics: quantum gases of ultracold atoms and quantum fluids of light. In this talk I will review some of the latest advances in ths study of these systems with a special focus on topological states of matter. After presenting the physical ideas underlying the generation of synthetic magnetic fields for neutral particles such as atoms and photons, I will discuss recent experimental evidence of  integer quantum Hall effects and Chern insulators. I will conclude with an overview of the exciting perspectives in the direction of observing fractional quantum Hall effects and the corresponding topological states of matter in up to four spatial dimensions.
