Abstract

The excitation of a propagating surface plasmon at a periodically modulated interface (grating) is well known in plasmonics. Present-day laser technology allows to extend this scheme to the regime of high power pulses with femtosecond duration, for fields strong enough to make the dynamics of electrons to be relativistic. We performed experimental an theoretical investigations where the excitation of surface plasmons is exploited in intense laser interaction with grating targets to optimize secondary emissions, including short pulses of electrons and protons and high harmonic generation. A scheme for the generation of few-cycle surface plasmons is also investigated.
